In order to protect its strategic and national security interests, India is actively pushing its AI-based innovation and developing infrastructure that is AI-ready. The nation’s defence establishment is currently attempting to utilise the information technology sector’s skills, and they are also making progress in the area of small guns, which has historically been limited to mechanical or technical advancements.
The technology of small guns has not advanced in a way that has fundamentally altered the game.
However, Adani Defence and Aerospace and its partner Israel Weapon Industries (IWI) have unveiled India’s first AI-based firing system, “ARBEL,” the next-generation small arms solution, at the DefExpo 2022 being held in Gandhinagar, taking a cue from nations like the US and China that are focusing on AI and MI (machine learning) to develop lethal autonomous weapons systems (LAWS).
ARBEL is a weapon-embedded Intelligent Fire Control System (IFCS) based on motion sensors that increases the lethality and survivability of soldiers.
It is equipped with a microprocessor, motion and trigger sensors, a control unit, and a rechargeable (field-level replaceable) battery. The system may be placed on and integrated with a variety of assault rifles and machine guns, including the TAVOR, ACE, and NAGEV, and it is not dependent on a specific optical component to function.
The higher receiver and optic combination that works best for the current mission can be chosen by the user. It offers a variety of characteristics, such as swift strikes against the adversary, demonstrated effectiveness in all terrains of warfare, environmental adaptability, higher hit probability and lethality in demanding combat scenarios and from less-than-ideal shooting positions.
The use of AI in warfare is spreading over the globe. India is also making the appropriate preparations for its military forces due to the potential for AI to fundamentally alter the nature of the existing state of global security.
ARBEL is the next-generation small weapons solution, according to Ashish Rajvanshi, CEO of Adani Defence & Aerospace, for boosting the lethality and survivability of the dismounted operator by accurately attacking targets in a condensed window of opportunity while under stress and tiredness. Simply put, once the user shoots the first round, the AI system reads and stores the target, position, and recoil of the weapon. This knowledge is then applied while firing the succeeding rounds at the same target. The technique equips the user with complete flexibility and battle readiness. In other words, the user has the choice to disable it when engaged in combat. In addition, the weapon will continue to work properly even if the ARBEL battery dies.
There isn’t much training needed, and the weapon doesn’t need to be changed. It facilitates the production of fully customised weapon profiles with no adaptation time.
