Another indication of the industry’s intensifying arms race between major technology companies is the fact that Google is in discussions to invest at least $200 million in artificial intelligence company Cohere Inc.
Cohere, a company launched in 2019, creates software for natural language processing that programmers may use to build chatbots and other features that can comprehend human voice and text for business use. The startup revealed a multi-year deal with Google in November of last year to use its cloud division to supply the computing capacity needed for Cohere to train its software models.
The sources claim that as part of the negotiations, Cohere also talked about a prospective strategic partnership with the chipmaker Nvidia Corp. Some sources claim that the firms’ ongoing talks may not succeed. There was no way to estimate Cohere’s value given any potential fresh finance. Both Google and Nvidia declined to comment. Toronto-based Cohere has not reacted to inquiries for comment.
Artificial intelligence is becoming more and more important to other tech giants. Microsoft Corp. is in early discussions to lead a fresh round of funding for OpenAI, another startup racing to create computer programmes that, within a few years, could allow machines to comprehend anything humans can.
