The IT behemoth Google recently acquired Alter, an AI avatar business that was developing avatars for social media users and brands to express their virtual identities.
TechCrunch reports that Google paid roughly $100 million to acquire the startup in an effort to enhance its content game and take on TikTok.
About two months ago, the deal was finalised, but neither business disclosed it to the public.
According to the article, some of Alter’s top executives altered their LinkedIn profiles to indicate that they had joined Google without mentioning the acquisition.
A Google official acknowledged the company’s acquisition of Alter, but she would to elaborate on the specifics of the deal.
Alter was first known as Facemoji, a platform that provided plug-and-play technology to game and app developers so they could incorporate avatar systems into their products.
Play Ventures, Roosh Ventures, and Twitter, which contributed $3 million to the firm, are a few of its backers. Alter replaced Facemoji afterwards.
According to TechCrunch, the founders of Alter, Jon Slimak and Robin Raszka, did not respond to a request for comment.
In the meantime, Google just introduced personalised emoticons to its Chat service.
According to a blog post by the internet giant, using emojis in Google Chat is a fantastic way for people to express themselves.
