Following the success of the first SmartBug in 2019, TDK Corporation has announced the InvenSense SmartBug 2.0 with a number of fresh and intriguing capabilities for consumer and IoT applications.
According to Sahil Choudhary, Product Marketing Director at InvenSense, a TDK Group company, “SmartBug 2.0 will take digital transformation to the next level by not only being a trusted source of smart sensor data, but by providing the ability to create effective machine learning models on a 2.5 x 3 mm sensor.”
Features of SmartBug 2.0
ICM-45686-S IMU: The SmartBug 2.0 replaces the ICM-42688-P IMU with the most recent BalancedGyro IMU, the TDK ICM-456xy, which has the lowest power consumption in the world (220 A @ 50 Hz 6-Axis). Due to the increased battery life, this enables developers to capture high quality IMU data for a significantly longer period of time (3x better). SmartBug 2.0 is advantageous for prototyping, data collection, and the creation of machine learning-based algorithms for products like AR glasses, VR, OIS, drones, MR, TWS, and robots thanks to this new IMU’s superior temperature stability and vibration rejection.
Machine Learning: The incorporation of machine learning is the main feature of SmartBug 2.0. (ML). Now, developers, ODMs, OEMs, and product designers may create machine learning solutions for the ICM-45686-S IMU using SmartBug 2.0 and the TDK sensor inference framework (SIF). To gather IMU sensor data, choose unique features, create ML models, test performance, deploy, and apply those models on the ICM-456xy IMU using the SmartBug 2.0, customers can use TDK’s all-in-one comprehensive software, or SIF. With the help of this comprehensive solution, ML aficionados can create unique motion classification algorithms and execute them at a current consumption of only 30 A on a 2.5*3 mm IMU. Examples of algorithms include those that categorise exercises (such as squats, jumping jacks, lateral lifts, or push-ups) and wrist gestures (fight, clench, shake, or still mode). Additionally, engineers can test these ML models in real use-cases and adjust the ML parameters as necessary to produce robust ML models at the lowest power thanks to the compact size and wireless nature of the SmartBug 2.0.
Head tracking solution: VibeSense360 from TDK was added to SmartBug 2.0 for use in TWS and AR applications. This will enable TWS and audio firms to obtain unprocessed sensor and head orientation data from a TDK solution at the lowest power (280 A at 50 Hz) and discover distinctive characteristics for enabling spatial audio. Air Motion solution: The addition of swipe gestures, motions for orienting the remote, and precise cursor tracking for smart TV remotes in SmartBug 2.0 improves TDK’s Air Motion solution.
Data collection enhancements: In response to customer input, SmartBug 2.0 has also changed the streaming and logging parameters in SmartBug to support multi-sensor and algorithm data logging for extended periods of time.
The user interface, BLE, WIFI, USB, and SD card logging, as well as earlier apps like asset monitoring, smart door lock, and sensor fusion, are all retained in SmartBug 2.0, maintaining the integrity of the original SmartBug experience.
