To enable us to make educated judgments about whether or not we require medication or other interventions, we expect medical practitioners to provide us with accurate information about ourselves and possible treatments. Instead, if your doctor “bullshits” you (yes, this term has been used in academic publications to refer to persuasion without regard for truth; it’s not a swear word) while deceiving you into believing that the advice you receive is authoritative, the decisions you make may be based on flawed evidence and could even be fatal.
Lying is not the same as bullshitting; liars deliberately work to hide the truth and do care about it. Bullshitting can, in fact, be more harmful than open lying. Thankfully, doctors don’t usually bullshit; if they did, one would think that ethics committees or the law would take action. However, what if the false medical advice wasn’t provided by a medical professional?
Most people are aware of ChatGPT, a potent chatbot, by this point. An interface driven by algorithms that can simulate human communication is called a chatbot. Chatbots are being used more and more, even to provide medical advice.
We examined ethical viewpoints on the use of chatbots to provide medical advice in a recent research. Putting your health in the hands of ChatGPT or similar platforms may be like playing Russian roulette; you might get lucky, but you might also lose. That being said, these platforms may be helpful and dependable for learning about wildlife, discovering the top attractions in Dakar, or receiving concise summaries of other topics of interest.
This is a result of chatbots such as ChatGPT trying to convince you without considering the facts. Its argumentation is so strong that contradictions in facts and logic are hidden. This effectively indicates that creating nonsense is a part of ChatGPT.
The voids
The problem lies in the fact that ChatGPT is not truly artificial intelligence in the sense that it cannot recognize your question, consider it, evaluate the facts, and provide a response that makes sense. Instead, it considers the words you’re using, makes a reasonable response prediction, and then delivers it.
This is a lot more powerful than the predictive text feature on your phone, which is comparable in some ways. It can, in fact, provide highly convincing garbage that is frequently true but occasionally false. It’s acceptable to receive unfavorable advice on a restaurant, but it’s highly problematic to be told that your peculiar-looking mole is not carcinogenic when it actually is.
This can also be viewed from the standpoint of rhetoric and logic. We want the medical advice we receive to be rational and scientific, starting with the data and ending with recommendations specific to our own health. Conversely, ChatGPT attempts to appear convincing even when it is uttering meaningless words.
For instance, ChatGPT frequently invents references to nonexistent literature when asked to produce citations for its assertions, despite the fact that the delivered language appears to be quite authentic. If a doctor performed that, would you trust them?
Dr Google vs. Dr ChatGPT
Currently, you may believe that Dr ChatGPT is at least superior to Dr Google, which is another tool that individuals use to attempt self-diagnosis.
Unlike the endless amounts of information offered by Dr. Google, chatbots such as ChatGPT provide succinct responses extremely rapidly. Of course, Dr. Google is not immune to false information, but it does not make an effort to sound credible.
It can be quite helpful for citizens to use Google or other search engines to find credible and verified health information (like that from the World Health Organization). Additionally, employing chatbots might be worse than utilizing Google, which is renowned for gathering and storing user data, including search keywords.
In addition to perhaps being deceptive, chatbots have the ability to aggressively request additional personal information and record information on your medical conditions, which might result in more personalized and probably accurate bullshit. That’s where the problem is. More data provided to chatbots may result in more accurate responses, but it also exposes more private health information. But not every chatbot is the same as ChatGPT. Some might be more particularly made for use in medical environments, and the benefits of using them might outweigh any potential drawbacks.
How to Proceed
In light of all this nonsense, what should you do if you’re tempted to use ChatGPT for medical advice?
First and foremost, never use it.
If you choose to follow the second rule, though, you should verify the veracity of the chatbot’s response because the medical advice it offers could not be accurate. For example, Dr. Google can refer you to trustworthy sources. But why take the chance of getting nonsense in the first place if you’re going to do it anyhow?
Thirdly, only give information to chatbots when necessary. Clearly, you get better medical advice the more individualized data you provide. Furthermore, most of us voluntarily and voluntarily give up information on mobile phones and other websites, so it might be challenging to withhold information. Furthermore, chatbots have the ability to request more. However, additional data for chatbots such as ChatGPT may potentially result in more convincing and personalized but erroneous medical advice.
