Through a number of programs, the Indian government has actively supported the development of artificial intelligence (AI) in the nation. These programs seek to close the gap between the supply and demand of AI expertise and to encourage the widespread deployment of AI in various industries. The Indian government is taking the following significant steps to support AI businesses in India by 2024:
- AI Education Framework: To enhance the AI talent pool and increase students’ employability by providing them with the newest, in-demand technology, the Indian government has created a strong framework for teaching AI to Indian students.
- National AI Portal: The India AI portal, which acts as a focal point for all AI-related projects and advances in India, was introduced by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY).
- Applied AI Research Center: The Telangana government established an applied AI research center in Hyderabad through partnerships with Intel India, the Public Health Foundation of India (PHFI), and the International Institute of Information Technology, Hyderabad (IIIT-H). This center focuses on finding solutions for problems in the healthcare and other areas of India.
- MCA 3.0 Portal: To encourage ease of doing business and compliance monitoring, the Ministry of Corporate Affairs (MCA) has redesigned its portal, MCA 21, utilizing data analytics, artificial intelligence, and machine learning to streamline regulatory filings for businesses.
- Global Partnerships and Events: To advance India’s vision and roadmap for social transformation, inclusion, and empowerment through responsible AI, the Indian government has organized events like Responsible AI for Social Empowerment (RAISE) and joined the Global Partnership on Artificial Intelligence (GPAI) as a founding member.
- NewGen Innovation and Entrepreneurship Development Centre (NewGen IEDC): This program aims to support technology-driven and knowledge-based start-ups by utilizing the creative potential of young people in academic settings, specifically in fields like artificial intelligence (AI), computer vision, the Internet of Things (IoT), FinTech, nanotechnology, and more.
- National Artificial Intelligence goal: The government think tank NITI Aayog created this goal, which aims to build a national AI platform, a network of AI centers, an AI workforce, and the ability to use AI in the social sector.
