In 2023, chatbots have become the main driver of the excitement surrounding generative AI (GenAI) and artificial intelligence (AI). Following the widely welcomed introduction of OpenAI’s ChatGPT in November 2022, tech companies hurried to introduce their own rivals in the market.
According to research firm GlobalData, AI has mostly been the domain of business and academic R&D labs for many years. However, the quick development of processing power and machine learning has made it feasible for AI to address issues in the real world.
According to GlobalData, the AI market as a whole will be valued $383.3 billion in 2030, representing a compound annual growth rate of 21% from 2022 to 2030.
Verdict looks back at the most well-liked chatbots of 2023, which was an interesting year.
ChatGPT
ChatGPT, a GenAI-powered chatbot from OpenAI, started a new chatbot revolution. On November 30, 2022, the website broke the record for the fastest one million user sign-up in just four days after it launched.
Since its debut, 92% of Fortune 500 firms worldwide have adopted chatbots, whereas before they were only used by users to experiment with prompts.
With the most recent release of GPT-4 Turbo, ChatGPT’s AI model has been updated on a regular basis.
Additionally, OpenAI has taken steps to turn the chatbot lucrative, most notably in August when ChatGPT Enterprise was released. The tool’s influence across industries was strengthened by the corporate and business-only subscription model.
ChatGPT described itself as “like a super-smart talking robot developed by OpenAI” in response to Verdict’s question. It can have a natural conversation with you and is a member of the GPT family. Consider it as a very sophisticated chatbot capable of providing answers, engaging in dialogue, and performing many language-related activities. Because it has been educated on a vast amount of internet content, it can comprehend and produce responses that are somewhat human.
Bard
On March 21, 2023, Alphabet, the parent company of Google, unveiled Bard, an AI chatbot. In September, the business increased its presence in Europe and Brazil.
Bard differs from ChatGPT primarily in that it is constantly online, giving users access to the most recent data and recommendations.
Users can “collaborate with Bard to brainstorm ideas, spark creativity, and accelerate productivity,” according to the business.
Bard had a difficult start. “It can be used to explain new discoveries from NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope to a 9-year-old, or learn more about the best strikers in football right now, and then get drills to build your skills,” Bard asserted during the now-famous launch demo.
In response to Verdict’s question on self-description, Bard stated that, at its core, it is a storyteller. However, I’m not your yarn-spinner by the fire! I’m an AI that Google created and trained on a ton of text and code. My area of expertise? incorporating language into creative, informative, and comprehending tapestries.
Grok
In November, Elon Musk made his AI chatbot Grok available to the general public. Grok is only incorporated into the X social media network. Taking a more “sarcastic” approach to the standard AI chatbot, the billionaire’s chatbot is meant to take on OpenAI, Google, and other AI businesses.
Grok is quite snarky and arrogant, and it leverages “real-time access to information from X.” Grok is a chatbot that Elon Musk’s AI business, xAI, says would “answer spicy questions that are rejected by most other AI systems.”
Like the other chatbots on this list, Grok is reportedly powered by LLM AI, but it also has additional data from X. Grok-1, the LLM, is reported to have more than 33 billion attributes. putting it behind the 1.76tn parameter GPT-4 LLM used by OpenAI.
Since Grok, the GenAI chatbot, has not yet been released in Europe, Verdict was unable to ask it to identify itself.
Microsoft Copilot
Early in February 2023, Microsoft launched Bing Chat, an AI chatbot that is connected with the company’s new Bing search engine. During its Ignite event in November, the tech giant relaunched the chatbot as one of several AI chatbots operating under the single name Microsoft Copilot.
Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella declared, “We are the Copilot company,” at the ignite event. We envision a time when everyone and everything you do will have a copilot.
Copilots are presently being rolled out by the chatbot in all of its main apps, including Edge, Bing, and its office suite. The basic chatbot, which took the role of Bing Chat, is free, but the cost of the individual Copilots varies depending on the program.
Like Bard, Copilot has an internet connection, so it can deliver information in real time.
“Microsoft Copilot is a series of AI companions that can help you with a wide range of tasks, such as coding, writing, generating images, answering general questions, and more,” Copilot said when Verdict asked it to describe itself. It’s similar to having an AI-powered personal assistant that helps you with everyday tasks. Put another way, it’s a tool that can assist you in your work by making recommendations and finishing assignments for you.
