According to what News18 has learned, an Artificial Intelligence Incubation Hub (AIIH) will be identifying artificial intelligence projects that may be critical for the Army and coordinating the evaluation of trials in those cases. This was set up jointly by the Army and Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) as part of a pact signed earlier this year.
The AIIH will also be tasked with identifying partners from the industry, academia, or start-ups to check the feasibility of ideas related to artificial intelligence projects for implementation, and it will be responsible for hiring resources and necessary hardware for validation of suggested AI projects for the force. This information comes from sources within the defence sector.
The new hub will be working in major domain areas including machine learning, auto-platforms, AI-based swarm technology, robotics, big data analytics, image processing, as well as cyber security and AI-based response mechanism. This will be based on the research and development expertise of BEL as well as areas where the Army could use AI.
The Army and BEL had signed a collaboration agreement in artificial intelligence (AI) for military purposes back in March of this year. The step was taken after the defence ministry had pushed for the expedited incorporation of new technology for defence applications. As part of this process, the defence services were asked to collaborate with defence public sector organisations (PSUs), which led to the step being taken.

INS Valsura, which is based in Jamnagar, has already been designated by the Navy as the Centre of Excellence in the field of big data, and in January 2020, a cutting-edge lab on artificial intelligence and big data analysis was established there.
Under the auspices of UDAAN, the Indian Air Force officially opened a Centre of Excellence for Artificial Intelligence in the month of July (Unit for Digitisation, Automation, Artificial Intelligence and Application Networking).
According to a statement released by the government, an AI framework and guidelines have been issued for projects and programmes within DRDO. Additionally, all DRDO system laboratories have started AI technology groups in order to incorporate AI features into all products.
