On eBay, artificial intelligence (AI) started to appear in new locations for brands, sellers, and customers in 2023. In the past, the marketplace included use cases for generative AI for listings, inventory management, and authentication. The most recent AI product from eBay to launch will now provide a visual experience for finding clothing and fashion. The brand refers to it as “Shop the Look.”
American and British eBay users will be the first to see Shop the Look. They must have viewed ten or more fashion items in the last 180 days in order to use it. It will present comparable-looking products to the one that is currently displayed for these consumers. For the time being, the recommendations are limited to the iOS version of the eBay app. Later on in 2024, it intends to release the tool along with its Android app.
According to Digital Commerce 360’s Global Online Marketplaces database, eBay is ranked sixth. By 2023 third-party GMV, the database ranks the 100 biggest of these markets.
The operation of eBay’s artificial intelligence-driven Shop the Look carousel Paul Romero, a product manager at eBay, described the feature in a blog post dated April 9: “Shop the Look is an immersive carousel of looks, tailored to our customers’ shopping history, complete with interactive hotspots that reveal similar items and outfit inspirations.” “Consider being met with a carefully curated selection of new and gently used clothing as well as high-end pieces that reflect your personal style.”
The application uses eBay’s eBay.ai technology to expand on the company’s earlier releases. Romero states that eBay anticipates Shop the Look to lessen transactional friction. Additionally, it aims to provide customers a better understanding of current fashion trends as they examine connected products.
Romero claimed that the tool enables users to “visualize how potential additions will complement their current wardrobe.” Similar to other fashion services like eBay consignment, Authenticity Guarantee, and Certified by Brand, Shop the Look aims to promote a circular fashion economy by lowering obstacles and enabling customers to purchase and sell the items they love.
eBay’s use of AI techniques as it seeks to expand in 2024
Even with a modest decline in gross merchandise volume (GMV) in 2023, eBay was nevertheless able to improve its revenue year over year by 3% to $10.11 billion. In response to growing competition from other up-and-coming and well-established online marketplaces, the company has demonstrated AI-powered tools to enhance product listings and photographs, including text enhancement and background removal.
Using an internal team focused on appropriate use of the technology, the company is introducing Shop the Look and other AI-powered products.
