A new app, which will combine HBO Max and Discovery Plus in the spring, will just be known as “Max.” According to a CNBC report, Max is being investigated by the legal department of Warner Bros. Discovery even if a final decision hasn’t been made. The integrated streaming service has been given the internal codename “BEAM,” and the attorneys are reportedly considering other names as well.
The “Max” name came about simply because Warner Bros. Discovery wanted HBO to blend in with its vast library of programmes without competing with work from Discovery, DC Comics, Warner Bros., CNN, and other sources. According to a report by CNBC, the new platform will take inspiration from Disney Plus and divide Warner Bros. Discovery products into various “hubs,” much to how Disney divides its various brands into Disney, Marvel, Star Wars, Pixar, and so on. eportedly, the new HBO and Discovery app will just be called “Max.”
Max’s price has not yet been made public. That name truly sounds like a proper noun that refers to a person. Perhaps I’m just growing used to it. We seem to be returning full circle to Cinemax at this point. There have reportedly been discussions within Warner Bros. Discovery about maintaining the HBO element in the name, but the other side appears to be winning. It sounds undoubtedly less prestigious without it.
David Zaslav, CEO of Warner Bros. Discovery, wants to raise subscriptions and advertising revenue to make the combined service profitable. Both HBO Max and Discovery Plus provide ad-supported monthly options for less money than ad-free subscriptions. Nearly 95 million global streaming users between the two services were recorded in Q3.
