The world of AI has opened new possibilities for India. All the tech biggies, like IBM, Facebook, Google are eyeing to invest in India. The government is also keenly active in fabricating the AI infrastructure in the country. However, India is yet to formulate a proper AI policy framework, which is mandatory for accelerating the maximum technological output and compete globally. But still we can witness the utilisation of AI in various sectors across all business verticals in the country.
AI policy framework in India and Niti Aayog’s role in it
Niti Aayog is the AI policy think tank of the country which was previously known as the planning commission. It is responsible for making an AI policy framework. According to a recent Niti Aayog’s report, certain agenda’s and approaches are etched concerning the use of AI in India. Let’s have a look at it;
Advance IP
A collaboration is suggested between The Ministry of Corporate Affairs and Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP) to work together on improving and enhancing the intellectual property laws. It also recommends building an advanced IP regime to work towards the innovation and better application of AI.
Improved Data Security
Special regulatory guidelines in the AI policy framework are being issued for data privacy and security through implication of improved cybersecurity based on AI.
Better Infrastructure Requirement
In the AIRAWAT approach paper, in order to boost and promote new innovation in AI , NITI Aayog has proposed to implement better infrastructure to support startups, students, researchers and AI innovation hubs.
Improved AI Laws
The government has also realized the necessity of having a proper legal regime for implementation of AI, ML and BD which involves creating a data repository where the private data will be anonymized and made available to stakeholders with identified parameters. The existing laws must be reviewed, eyeing the scope for improvement. They must be broadly defined leaving open for all the stakeholders to design their individual protocols based on their requirements.
Responsible AI
1n 2020, the NITI Aayog also initiated ‘Responsible AI’ which was an approach paper with an aim to address and present the concerns and ideas of the body towards the future of AI in India. The paper discussed the ways and ideas in order to enforce responsible AI principles. This paper covered various aspects such as education of AI, its ethical uses, security , its legal policies and responsible behaviour. The paper also encouraged that there should be a proper body overviewing and collaborating with the existing regulators of AI across all sectors.
AI In Education
The government of India in 2020 has introduced a new education policy. Artificial Intelligence is seen as an important area in which the students should focus for more knowledge and acquire better skills. Hence, the government decided to introduce artificial Intelligence as a contemporary subject in the curriculum of schools. This initiative comes under the ‘AI for All’.
To conclude, it can be clearly stated that the government is promoting Artificial Intelligence and has realized it’s great potential. It is estimated that the country will see massive development in the next 5 years in the field of Artificial Intelligence and Machine learning. With the global advancement in AI, India should increase their involvement with major projects across the globe in association with top international bodies. But before that a comprehensive AI policy framework is needed which can act as a guiding stone for the future endeavors.
