Amazon workers are rushing to take advantage of the sudden popularity of ChatGPT and similar artificial intelligence (AI) technologies.
One example of this excitement is a leaked internal document that shows how 67 different Amazon teams use ChatGPT and similar apps.
Insider was able to get a copy of the paper, which is called “Generative AI-ChatGPT Impact and Opportunity Analysis.” Insider has learned that the document was made after managers asked workers to come up with ideas for how they could use AI chatbot technology to improve their goods and workflow.
As Insider reported, the paper shows how much work Amazon is doing behind the scenes to deal with the sudden rise of ChatGPT and other AI chatbot apps.
The document says that Amazon workers want to use the AI chatbot to automatically make software code and marketing materials. It said that salespeople could use it to quickly look through Amazon’s and its rivals’ financial reports to find their strategic goals.
Some of the ideas in the paper are already being tested in the form of prototypes. These include a security automation tool and an engineering app that can quickly answer questions about Amazon Web Services cloud goods.
It also suggested that Amazon shoppers have a search bar like ChatGPT that “can explain the pros and cons of different brands and cite and sum up user reviews.” Bloomberg noted that Amazon later posted job openings that hinted at a major change to its search bar.
A spokesperson for Amazon told Insider that the company has been using machine learning and artificial intelligence for more than 25 years in “virtually everything we do.”
“By every meaningful measure, Amazon is the leader in AI, and our AWS machine learning business has more customers, partners, and capabilities than any other cloud,” the representative wrote in an email. “Generative AI is still in its early stages, but we are investing in it across all of our businesses. We already offer a lot of unique features or are working hard to bring them to customers in the near future.”
Even more, Amazon workers want to use ChatGPT for an important part of Amazon’s decision-making process called PRFAQ. Amazon needs employees to write a fake press release and FAQ about a new idea before they can pitch it. Some staff members thought ChatGPT could speed up this process.
It’s not clear if Amazon will let that happen or not. Amazon lawyers have told workers in the past to be careful about how they use ChatGPT at work. Staff members can use the AI assistant, but they can’t share sensitive information with ChatGPT, like internal emails or source code. An internal memo said that the same rules apply to the new Microsoft Bing search engine that uses ChatGPT’s tech. Some managers said that when workers use the chatbot on a work computer, they get real-time alerts.
