E2S Power and India Power Corporation Ltd (IPCL) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to collaborate to transform power stations that run on fossil fuel in India into thermal energy storage (TES) systems for renewable energy.
E2S Power is a thermal energy storage solutions developer and IPCL is a power utility company.
The twin objectives of India are being amalgamated through this initiative. The government wants to attain 227 GW renewables capacity by the end of 2022 only and wants to decommission 50 GW coal based power plants in coming years. In this scenario, the thermal energy storage (TES) technology of E2S can convert the existing infrastructure of the coal based thermal power plants into thermal energy storages required by the renewable sector immediately.
IPCL and E2S Power will collaborate with other major players in the power and RE sector in India to identify, evaluate and offer best storage solutions for the plants and facilities that are being phased out.
E2S says that this collaboration will help in transforming stressed thermal power assets into clean energy storage facilities, contributing significantly to the nation’s renewable portfolio. TES gives new life to aging inventories, protects employment, helps just transition and there is no challenge of bio-hazards.

Last year, E2S Power had come up with TWEST technology in TES which is projected as a solution for intermittent power from the renewable projects and also allows the fossil fuel based thermal power plants to run carbon dioxide free.
