Alphabet subsidiary Google may have been slower than OpenAI to make its AI capabilities publicly available in the past, but CEO Sundar Pichai is ensuring that the company advances quickly. The chatbot Gemini was introduced by Google’s AI lab DeepMind in February. On May 14, at the company’s annual developer conference, Pichai demonstrated how Google has started incorporating its state-of-the-art AI systems into its products, including the provision of AI-powered photo searching and summaries of emails and internet search results.
On May 8, Google DeepMind unveiled AlphaFold 3, a technology that might completely change drug discovery. The company is still working on AI systems to change science. Additionally, Google’s Jigsaw team, which develops technology to counter threats to open societies, is leading the way in the development of AI tools and techniques for handling misinformation and disinformation and improving the quality of online conversations, all while more than half of the world’s population heads to the polls in what is expected to be the biggest election year ever globally.
