Major policy breaches in 2023 stopped 2.28 million apps from being published on the Google Play Store. The tech giant outlined the actions done in the past year to protect Play Store users’ security and privacy in a new report. The business also stated that 3,33,000 developer accounts have been banned from the platform due to frequent, serious policy violations and verified malware. In an effort to enhance the general app marketplace user experience, Google has also implemented additional regulations.
Google detailed the steps it took in 2023 to safeguard its customers against dangerous apps, malware, and incidents of online frauds in a post on its security-focused blog. In addition to blocking 333K developer accounts and prohibiting 2.28 million apps from being published due to policy violations, the platform rejected or remediated almost 200K app submissions for improper use of sensitive rights. Access to SMS and Contacts, as well as background location tracking, are examples of sensitive permissions.
The app marketplace has also sued two app developers in federal court for repeatedly attempting to upload fake investment and cryptocurrency trading apps to deceive users. The business made clear that the con artists used false information to open a gap in the acceptance procedure. Google continued, “We will vigorously pursue those who attempt to take advantage of our users. This lawsuit is a critical step in holding these bad actors accountable.”
Additionally, the IT behemoth is modifying its policies to guarantee improved consumer safety. Apps that allow users to create accounts will now have to offer the ability to delete data and accounts both online and within the app. The Play Store’s Data Safety section now includes this feature as well.
Additionally, Google reorganized the App Defense Alliance (ADA) after joining the steering committee in partnership with Microsoft and Meta. ADA is currently a part of the Linux Foundation family, under the Joint Development Foundation. According to the corporation, the alliance aims to prepare remedies against growing security concerns and implement best practices and recommendations for app security.
The safety campaigns cover more ground than just Google Play Store apps. According to the firm, Play Protect’s capabilities have been enhanced to enable real-time code-level inspection of apps downloaded via alternate app marketplaces. It states that more than five million new harmful off-Play apps were found. The article claims that Play Protect’s machine learning algorithms get better over time by learning from every app that is submitted.
