A groundbreaking multidisciplinary Center for Responsible AI will be established at IIT Madras thanks to a $1 million donation from Google. This centre will pursue research on many elements of bias in AI, particularly from an Indian perspective.
In order to advance attempts to implement AI models that aid in “crop disease monitoring, yield outcomes prediction, and bringing efficiency to Kisan call centres,” google.org will provide a similar amount to independent non-profit Wadhwani AI.
In order to address issues in agriculture in a scalable way, the company also declared its intention to contribute to the agro stack established by the Government of India using a combination of remote sensing and AI. In an interview with Indian Express, Manish Gupta, Director of Google Research India, said that Google would use its AI models on satellite pictures to identify details such as agricultural boundaries and locations. Additionally, it will improve knowledge of the agricultural environment.
With the Telangana government, Google has already launched a pilot project and has been collaborating with a few entrepreneurs. The business uses pictures collected over time to look for specific actions like sowing, harvesting, and even burning of stubble. Along with this, the team is enhancing its prior model for Indic languages by making it capable of understanding text and speech in as many as 100 different languages. They worked together with the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), where their group plans to gather anonymized speech data from individuals in 773 districts, reflecting diversity in terms of gender, age, and a variety of socioeconomic and educational backgrounds.
A cutting-edge AI and machine learning model that can recognise and even highlight medications in handwritten prescriptions has also been released by Google. By enhancing the humans involved, such as pharmacists, this will serve as an assistive technology for digitising handwritten medical papers. However, no decision will be made simply based on the output provided by this technology.
