India is experimenting with the newest technology to create climate models as the nation continues to experience frequent droughts, floods, and heavy rains. Artificial Intelligence (AI) is this new technology that will help in weather forecasting.
With 1.4 billion people living there, India is the world’s second-largest producer of water-intensive goods like sugar, wheat, and rice. Therefore, precise weather forecasting is essential.
“The IMD (India Meteorological Department) expects the AI-based climate models and advisories to help improve forecasts,” KS Hosalikar, head of climate research and services at IMD, told Reuters.
IMD will use supercomputers to give forecasts based on mathematical models. According to the government, a number of ministry-affiliated institutes are using AI and machine learning (ML) techniques to increase the accuracy of their weather, climate, and ocean forecasts.
Global weather organizations are concentrating on artificial intelligence (AI) since it can reduce expenses and increase efficiency. Predicting weather patterns is a useful tool for recognizing and mitigating climate change.
According to CSE, extreme weather events brought on by global warming have killed over 3,000 people so far this year.
Experts assert that in order to fully utilize artificial intelligence in weather forecasting, improved data is required. Parthasarathi Mukhopadhyay, a climate scientist at the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology, stated that “no AI model for location-specific magnification of existing model forecasts is feasible without having high-resolution data in space and time.”
Other artificial intelligence (AI) systems, such as watsonx.ai, are being developed in collaboration between IBM and NASA to measure past environmental changes and forecast future changes.
