Sundar Pichai, the CEO of Google parent Alphabet, is expected to be let go or step down shortly in the wake of the Gemini fiasco, as Helios Capital founder Samir Arora feels he should.
The industry veteran wrote: “My guess is he will be fired or resign- as he should” in response to a user on social media site X (previously Twitter) who inquired Arora’s opinion on the problems surrounding Google’s globally released AI chatbot Gemini. He was leading the charge on AI, but he has totally failed at it and allowed others to take the lead.”
Gemini AI: What is it?
Recently, Google officially launched the artificial intelligence (AI) tool for consumers worldwide and relaunched its chatbot Bard as Gemini. The software company claims that consumers in more than 230 nations and territories can now interact with the Gemini Pro 1.0 model in more than 40 languages.
Included in the Google One AI Premium Plan, Gemini Advanced is available for $19.99/month after a free two-month trial. AI Premium users can expect to see Gemini (previously known as Duet AI) integrated into a number of Google products, including Gmail, Docs, Slides, Sheets, and more. This information was just shared on the Google blog.
A whirlwind of disputes
A week after the introduction, there are already disputes. According to an AP article, Google issued an apology on February 23 for the botched launch of a new AI image generator connected to Gemini AI. The company acknowledged that the tool might occasionally “overcompensate” for a lack of variety even when it made no sense.
Google responded to concerns by announcing that it has chosen to temporarily stop the chatbot from creating images. In a blog post, senior vice president Prabhakar Raghavan, who is in charge of Google’s search engine and other divisions, said, “It’s clear that this feature missed the mark,” apologised for any offensive or erroneous photos, and said he was appreciative of user comments.
While Raghavan did not provide particular examples, social media brought attention to occasions in which the Gemini AI image generator, in addition to portraying Black and Asian people as German troops during the Nazi era, portrayed a Black lady as one of the founding fathers of the United States, according to AP.
While defending the chatbot’s purpose, Raghavan noted that some questions caused “overcompensation” and that the tool was intended to accommodate a variety of requests.
According to sources on February 23, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (Meity) is probably going to send Google a notice on Gemini’s “biassed” answer to a query concerning Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Following a social media complaint from an X user, Gemini came under criticism for supposedly being “biassed” against Prime Minister Modi. The viral tweet purports to demonstrate the AI model’s “bias” in response to a question on PM Modi, former US President Donald Trump, and President Volodymyr Zelenskyy of Ukraine.
It was alleged that the Gemini AI programme correctly identified PM Modi in response to a question concerning fascism. Nevertheless, the AI tool declined to provide a definitive response when the identical issue was posed regarding Zelenskyy and Donald Trump.
In response to the X user’s complaint earlier in the day, Union Minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar said that the site broke several laws and IT regulations. Chandrasekhar tagged Google and the Meity and stated, “These are violations of several provisions of the Criminal code and direct violations of Rule 3(1)(b) of Intermediary Rules (IT rules) of the IT act.” This indicated that more action will be taken in this regard.
