India is experiencing a tremendous expansion in the skill pool for technology at a time when artificial intelligence (AI) has taken the world by storm. According to research by the business social network LinkedIn, the nation is currently among the top five AI talent centers in the globe.
The ‘Future of Work Report – AI at Work’ from LinkedIn noted that the number of users with AI skills was 9X higher globally in June 2023 compared to January 2016. “Singapore, Finland, Ireland, India, and Canada are experiencing the fastest rate of AI skills diffusion,” it added.
India had 14 times more people add AI abilities to their profiles in January 2017 compared to January 2016, which allowed it to move up to the fourth spot on the list of fastest-growing talent hubs.
Singapore saw a 20X rise in AI skills between January 2016 and June 2023, making it the country with the quickest rate of AI skills dispersion. Finland (16X) and Ireland (15X) were the other nations ahead of India. The fifth place on the list went to Canada (13X).
Question-answering, classification, recommender systems, computer vision, and natural language processing (NLP) were the AI talents with the quickest growth. LinkedIn claims that industries like technology, retail, education, and financial services have all incorporated AI expertise.
Following the launch of ChatGPT last year, the number of LinkedIn members who added AI capabilities to their profiles nearly doubled, according to the examination of 25 countries by the LinkedIn report. From 7.7% in May–November 2022, the figure increased to 13% from 2022–2023. To put things in perspective, ChatGPT debuted in November 2022.
“The spread of skills across industries, locations, and talent is essential if productivity gains from AI are to live up to their full potential. It will undoubtedly take time for AI to be adopted and for its application to be optimized, but at this early point, it seems that the speed of dissemination is beginning. The most promising scenario for the world economy is one in which innovation can cross international boundaries and boost productivity growth for all, according to Karin Kimbrough, chief economist at LinkedIn.
Since the introduction of ChatGPT, AI use in India has risen quickly. Indian startups and businesses have jumped on the AI bandwagon by developing solutions on top of OpenAI’s APIs and developing new algorithms for use cases in tech, fintech, SaaS, and other areas. The most recent funding activity in the sector includes ZuAI and SocialBoat obtaining early-stage money, as well as Kombai’s $4.5 Mn round.
