On Friday, the Maharashtra government instructed the state’s Director General of Police (DGP) to take severe measures against individuals who are producing deepfake images, films, clips, or other information, and disseminating it via digital and social media platforms amid the ongoing Lok Sabha elections.
According to the government, these are produced by misusing a number of tools, including Photoshop, machine learning (ML), and artificial intelligence (AI). It’s concerning when this tactic is abused during election seasons.
These poorly produced deepfake images, films, or clips seem authentic and may cause confusion or damage to the reputation of the person in question.
According to a government announcement, the government has instructed the state DGP to take harsh action against those who make and broadcast “deepfake” information in an effort to stem the rise in these incidents during election season and ensure a transparent and clean electoral process.
In its rules, the Election Commission has also instructed parties to stop spreading misleading information about candidates, political parties, or election-related issues, as well as from manipulating real images, audio files, and videos.
