The team in charge of fact-checking for the government is anticipated to be led by representatives from the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY). This squad will likely be assembled by the centre, according to a source, in order to verify information about the government, particularly that which is shared on social media and the internet.
The three-member group is expected to consist of two representatives from the IT ministry. The third participant, however, ought to be informed about the law, social media, or public policy.
The publication cited a source who said, “The ministry-led body will coordinate with other government departments on the fact-check.”
According to the article, the Press Material Bureau (PIB) will progressively lose its responsibilities for fact-checking and refuting incorrect material if the committee led by MeitY officials is chosen. PIB was the designated organisation prior to these reports since it was famous for carrying out such fact-checking.
According to the story, the potential MeitY-led fact-checking committee will only validate news and fact-based content. It will reportedly lack the power to assess or scrutinise the outlets’ provided opinions.
The MeitY-led, three-member council will supposedly also be required to make the justification for any take-down orders it issues public because the measure has garnered criticism from a number of parties. A final decision regarding the governing powers to be given to this body has not yet been made.
