The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology has been India’s AI captain since the invention of AI. The year 2022 was the same. Here, we are taking a look at MeitY’s AI projects from 2022.
Digital Personal Data Protection Bill 2022: The Digital Personal Data Protection Bill 2022 was announced by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) on November 18. The aim of this Act is to make provisions for the processing of digital personal data in a way that acknowledges both the necessity to process personal data for legitimate purposes and the right of persons to have their personal data protected.
The bill was dropped later this year after a proposal to do so was made by Union Minister for Electronics and Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnaw in the Lok Sabha. The motion was approved by voice vote.
Draft National Data Governance Framework: India’s economy is moving quickly toward being more data-driven and computerised. The volume of data is growing exponentially along with digitalization and interaction, opening up prospects for greater governance, service delivery, and innovation in fields vital to social transformation.
The National Data Governance Framework Policy seeks to improve data access, quality, and utilisation in accordance with the decade’s emerging and present technological needs.
Youth for Unnati and Vikas with AI, or YUVAi, is a programme that MeitY introduced this year as the new iteration of their Responsible AI for Youth initiative. The initiatives intended to close the widening skills gap and prepare the next generation for the digital world.
With the goal of fostering a deeper knowledge of AI, YUVAi trains students in grades 8 through 12 nationwide in AI abilities and equips them to build and apply AI with a focus on the needs of people. Additionally, the course provides students with a hands-on learning opportunity to comprehend and recognise how AI technology may solve pressing issues and promote inclusive national growth.
Electronic India Bhashini: Electronic India India’s AI-driven language translation tool is called BHASHINI. The government seeks to include startups in the process of technological innovation, creation, and consumption. MSMEs, startups, and individuals will have access to AI and NLP resources through the Bhashini Platform. The platform will stimulate the entire digital ecosystem and is interoperable.
“It is an important element of PM Modi’s vision to give opportunities for Indian young and link the country,” said MoS MeitY Rajeev Chandrasekhar. Bhashini will make sure that residents use the internet and digital government services in their own tongues, he continued, while BaratNet and 5G would help realise the goal of “connecting all Indians” to the internet.
This year, UIDAI unveiled Aadhaar Mitra, a new chatbot powered by AI and machine learning. The new chatbot has improved functionality including checking the progress of Aadhaar updates and enrollments, monitoring the status of Aadhaar PVC cards, learning the location of enrollment centres, etc. Using Aadhaar Mitra, people may now record their complaints and follow up on them. A strong grievance redressal process is in place at UIDAI, and it includes the organization’s headquarters, regional offices, technology centre, and active contact centre partners. It has been working nonstop to improve the experience of Aadhaar holders.
According to MeitY, UIDAI can resolve roughly 92% of CRM complaints within a week thanks to a coordinated, resident-centric approach.
