With Himalayan foothills in the north, Gangetic plain in the centre, and pilgrimage cities like Varanasi and Sarnath embedded in its heart, Uttar Pradesh is one of the most popular states of India. It houses the birth towns of Lord Rama and Lord Krishna and the death bed of Lord Buddha. It is home to one of the Seven Wonders of the World, the Taj, and hosts one of the greatest mass pilgrimage, the Kumbh Mela.
The rich culture and tradition of Uttar Pradesh have always garnered tourist attention to the state. From inspiring Vedic literature to witnessing the Mauryan, Mughal, and British empires, the state has seen it all. And now, it’s gearing up for yet another revolution – the evolution of AI.
As AI is becoming ubiquitous across sectors like finance, agriculture, and healthcare, its ability to grasp knowledge and make decisions has also caught the eye of the government. And Uttar Pradesh is one of the first states to drive this digital push to governance.
AI-based common beneficiary database
Uttar Pradesh has prepared a common beneficiary database of the people eligible for different schemes. “This Artificial Intelligence-based database will help the Government to target citizens with all the schemes they are suited for and avoid duplication of efforts in the way of approaching separately for different schemes,” said Alok Kumar, Additional Chief Secretary, IT, Uttar Pradesh.
AI video surveillance platform for prisons
The government of Uttar Pradesh has deployed an AI-enabled video surveillance platform called Jarvis in around 70 prisons. The platform will monitor real-time footage from over 700 CCTV cameras and flag any segment that suspects unlawful activity. “Key UP Police officials access Mobile App for Real-Time insights on potential threats covering 900 km area across parameters like violence, unauthorized intrusions, illegal mobile phone and weapons.”
AI-bots in schools to curb negligence and corruption
To upgrade education in the state, the UP government is all set to bring AI bots to secondary school examinations. “The bots, installed in schools, will help track students and proxy invigilators besides assessing students on their previous grades, participation, and performance. Implementing AI on such a large scale would help in fixing the loopholes in the current system”, said an official.
Portal and DBT platform for migrants
UP government deployed AI to solve the migrant crisis of the lockdown. “Over 35 lakh migrants came back to the state and a portal was designed to compile information about them. The portal was not only used for providing Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) and food grains but also for providing jobs. The data was kept open for the industries and thus many companies hired these migrants based on the openings and skills,” informed Kumar.
Use of CSCs in rural areas
The government of UP activated over 65,000 common service centres across the rural areas to deliver daily services to the citizen during the lockdown. The CSCs in Uttar Pradesh conducted over 1.65 crore transactions related to home delivery of food grains, e-pass, etc.,” revealed Kumar.
Besides, the Chief Minister’s helpline operational for a couple of years in UP doubled up during the pandemic to redress people’s grievances. Twenty-two new services were added on the state’s single window clearance portal for industries – nivestmitra. During the pandemic period, it issued around sixty thousand NOCs without any manual intervention.
Also, the state has set up a centre for Geo-informatics for planning, mapping, and monitoring assets such as state government works, land, etc. it has also relaunched its Startup Policy in 2020 to woo manufacturers shift base in UP.
