Travel Lemming unveiled its list of the top 150 things to do in the USA in 2023 to kick off the summer travel season. The internet guide, which has more than 10 million subscribers, compiles the list every year.
The book this year openly addresses the emergence of generative AI by emphasising that all of the attractions on the list were personally chosen by human designers.
The list includes the largest musical instrument in the world in Virginia, a Bavarian village in Washington, a tiger sanctuary in Colorado, and a ghost town in the Nevada desert, all of which demonstrate the breadth of America’s variety.
The top 10 activities listed by Travel Lemming are as follows:
The Wild Animal Refuge (Keenesburg, Colorado) is an outdoor refuge for rescued animals, including nine lions flown from Ukraine and 39 ex-Tiger King owner Joe Exotic’s tigers.
In the Cascade Mountains of Washington, there is a village with a Bavarian theme that offers a flavour of Germany.
Valley of Fire State Park in Nevada is a 46,000-acre crimson oasis of petroglyphs, petrified forests, and desert outcroppings.
Pilsen is a dynamic Latino neighbourhood in Chicago, Illinois, with exciting art, music, and delectable cuisine.
The largest musical instrument in the world can be found in the 400 million-year-old network of caves known as Luray Caves in Virginia.
A fanciful light show piece called Sensorio is located in Paso Robles, California, and it has 100,000 stemmed spheres in it.
From July 28 to 30, the New Jersey Lottery Festival of Ballooning in Readington, New Jersey, will feature 100 vibrant hot air balloons.
Brewery hopping is a daily pastime in Asheville, North Carolina, that lets you experience the best of the nation’s “Beer City.”
An unknown state park in Utah with 16.6 miles of singletrack mountain biking trails is Dead Horse Point State Park.
Olympia, the underappreciated state capital of Washington, is home to a thriving artistic scene and a number of neighbouring natural wonders.

The list is produced by a group of twenty writers and editors from Travel Lemming with the intention of showcasing the country’s lesser-known attractions.
The rise of generative AI chatbot advisors, which have recently been promoted as a new method of vacation planning by numerous major internet companies, is also specifically mentioned on this year’s list.
If we let AI determine our vacation plans, we’ll all end up in the same places, the report claims, “like lemmings over the cliff.”
Abigail Bliss, editor of Travel Lemming, said: “These activities are based on first-hand human experiences from seasoned travellers.” Artificial intelligence-generated proposals cannot replace the genuine counsel of locals who have dined at these establishments, experienced the intensity of these events, and witnessed America’s magnificence.
Every Silicon Valley generative AI demo, according to Nate Hate, CEO of Travel Lemming, “has a travel planning scenario. However, the major tech firms appear to have forgotten that travelling is about discovering one’s senses. AI chatbot recommendations would quickly grow stale without human creators to share their real-world experiences.
