Modern Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies are being used by the Indian government’s Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare to improve farming practices and boost productivity. Being a driving force behind the integration of AI, the Ministry is establishing a standard for using cutting-edge technology to solve the problems that India’s farmers face. It is supporting the network strategy of the Ministry of Electronics & IT, Government of India’s India Digital Ecosystem Architecture (InDEA) 2.0.
An important turning point in this process has been the creation of ‘Kisan e-Mitra,’ an AI-driven chatbot that responds to questions from farmers regarding the PM Kisan Samman Nidhi program. In just two months, over 21 lakh farmers have utilized this all-inclusive solution, which is available in Hindi, Tamil, Odia, Bangla, and English. It is also developing to support other government programs.
In addition, the Ministry is working with the commercial sector to build a National Pest Surveillance System. AI and machine learning (ML) algorithms identify crop problems and provide farmers with timely information so they may take immediate action. It is anticipated that this effort will produce healthier crops, which could increase yields and enhance farmers’ livelihoods.
A tripartite Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was inked on January 17, 2024, by the Wadhwani Foundation, IndiaAI under Digital India Corporation, and the National Farmers’ Welfare Programme Implementation Society. The MoU was signed in the presence of senior officials from the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, the Ministry of Electronics & IT, the CEO of the Wadhwani Institute of Technology and Policy, Dr. P.K. AI can change the game, according to Shri Manoj Ahuja, who highlighted its applications in resource optimization, yield prediction, crop monitoring, alerts, feedback gathering, and pest control. Initiating a revolutionary journey with the Ministry and planting the seeds of innovation and knowledge for a more prosperous and food-secure future brought great joy to Shri Prakash Kumar.
As per the Memorandum of Understanding, Wadhwani Foundation will offer vital assistance in developing and implementing an AI plan. In line with the MeitY’s National Plan for AI, the Foundation pledges to support the Ministry in making India a global leader in AI-driven digital agriculture transformation. With the establishment of an AI cell within the Ministry, the Ministry has formalized the use of AI in transforming digital agriculture, making this collaboration a significant turning point in the country’s agricultural landscape.
