The Government of India (GOI) had set a target of ensuring that 30% of all vehicles sold in India by 2030 would be electric. Numerous states have taken the initiative to do their bit for achieving the target. With incentives of up to ₹ 10,000 per kWh for electric vehicles, the Gujarat government has ensured that the maximum ex-factory price for electric two-wheelers will be up to ₹1.5 lakh, up to ₹5 lakh for electric three-wheelers and ₹15 lakh for electric four-wheelers.
Not far behind are states like Delhi, Maharashtra, Meghalaya, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh who have exempted registration fees and road tax on all EVs, apart from a slew of subsidies and incentives for EV buyers. At Amazon’s Smbhav Summit held in April 2021, Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari said, “India is moving ahead towards making electric vehicles. In due course of time, we will be the number one electric vehicle (EV) maker in the world. All reputed brands are present in India.”
The government is certainly trying its best to provide the right stimulus to encourage EV manufacturers, EV charging infrastructure providers and EV buyers to scale up EV adoption. In fact, the Meghalaya government is offering free land to those who would like to set up EV charging infrastructure.
